New Delhi, Oct 21: The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, has approved the operationalisation of Ladakh’s first Government Medical College in Leh from the academic year 2027-28, following the intervention of Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena.
The approval will allow the administration to initiate recruitment for 103 sanctioned regular posts in a phased manner, according to academic requirements. The development is expected to expand access to medical education and strengthen healthcare services in the Union Territory.
The establishment of the medical college fulfills a long-standing demand of the people of Ladakh for access to quality medical education within the region. It will provide new opportunities for students aspiring to pursue medical studies without having to depend entirely on institutions outside the Union Territory.
The college is also expected to strengthen clinical training facilities and contribute to the development of healthcare infrastructure and medical services in Ladakh. Its operationalisation will support the region’s long-term requirement for trained medical professionals and improved healthcare facilities.
The approval comes in the post-abrogation of Article 370 period. In August 2019, the Centre abrogated Article 370, which had granted special constitutional status to the former state of Jammu and Kashmir. The state was subsequently reorganised into two Union Territories: Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
Since its formation as a separate Union Territory, Ladakh has continued to pursue the development of public services and infrastructure suited to its regional requirements. The proposed medical college is expected to contribute to this process by expanding educational opportunities and strengthening the healthcare system.
With operations scheduled to begin in the 2027-28 academic year, the Government Medical College in Leh is expected to mark an important step in expanding medical education and healthcare facilities for the people of Ladakh.
