Tarn Taran (Punjab), October 2 : Two unidentified suspected intruders were shot dead by the Border Security Force (BSF) along the India-Pakistan border in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district on Friday, officials said.
According to a senior BSF official, the incident took place at around 11:30 a.m. near the Tarn Taran border. Three men were allegedly seen moving towards the border during daylight hours and attempting to enter Indian territory by taking cover behind paddy crops.
BSF personnel challenged the men and asked them to stop. However, they continued moving towards the border, following which the BSF personnel opened fire. Two of the men were killed, while the third person turned back towards the Pakistan side, the official said.
The identities of the two deceased men have not yet been established. Officials are also investigating whether they were carrying any weapons at the time of the incident.
The official said both men appeared to be in their twenties and were wearing Pathan suits. One of them was reportedly wearing an expensive watch.
Following the incident, the Pakistan Rangers requested a flag meeting with the BSF. The meeting was held at around 7 p.m. on Friday.
The bodies of the two men were lying around 50 metres beyond the border fence until the meeting was completed. During the meeting, the Pakistan Rangers requested the BSF to return the bodies.
Following discussions between the two sides, it was decided that the bodies would be handed over to Pakistan after completion of the required legal formalities.
The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination as part of the investigation. Authorities are also working to establish the identities of the deceased and determine the circumstances surrounding their attempted movement towards the Indian border.
The incident comes amid continued security vigilance along the India-Pakistan border in Punjab, where the BSF maintains strict surveillance to prevent unauthorised crossings and other cross-border activities.
