According to police, businessman Praveen Jain received three missed calls from a UAE-based number at around 8:15 p.m. on September 16. His son Ayush later received a call from the same number at around 9:27 p.m. The caller allegedly demanded Rs 1 crore and threatened the family with serious consequences while claiming to be associated with gangster Goldy Brar.

A case was registered at the Roop Nagar police station on September 17. Police said an analysis of the communication trail showed that the calls were routed through a virtual private server and data-centre infrastructure linked to the UAE.

The investigation led police to Aarif alias Pistol, 32, who allegedly acted as a link between Dubai-based callers and their associates in India. He was arrested from Ahmedabad's Vejalpur on September 24 with the assistance of Gujarat Police.

Police alleged that Aarif paid a Dubai-based associate, identified as Aarish, to make the extortion call. He also allegedly instructed him to speak in Haryanvi so that the threat appeared to have originated from a local criminal.
Police subsequently arrested Mubarik alias Gullu from Delhi on September 25. According to investigators, he allegedly helped plan the extortion attempt and arranged accommodation in Kirari for shooters who were supposed to carry out the attack if the extortion demand was not met.

Police later received intelligence indicating that the accused were allegedly planning to fire multiple rounds at Jain's residence in Roop Nagar and repeat the extortion demand. Security arrangements were subsequently made at the residence, preventing the alleged attack.

During the investigation, police also found that the same UAE-based number was allegedly used to target another Delhi businessman in Rohini.

On September 19, the younger brother of a construction businessman reportedly received two WhatsApp calls and a 37-second audio message from the number. The caller allegedly identified himself as Vikrant from Mahendergarh, claimed links with the Goldy Brar gang and demanded Rs 1 crore within 48 hours.

The caller allegedly threatened the family with firing and other consequences if the demand was not met. A separate case was registered at Vijay Vihar police station on September 24.

According to police, four suspected shooters had allegedly been engaged to carry out the threats. Two of them were reportedly from Panipat, while the other two were from Khalapar in Muzaffarnagar.

One of the suspected shooters, Nawab Ali alias Sonij, was arrested on October 1 from a moving train near Rewari with assistance from the Railway Protection Force.

Police said the investigation is continuing to identify other members of the alleged network and establish their roles in the extortion attempts and planned attacks.
