New Delhi , Oct 30 : Bollywood actress Sara Ali Khan has faced criticism from a Muslim Maulavi over her recent visit to the Kedarnath Temple in Uttarakhand. Maulana Mufti Shahabuddin Razvi Barelvi, National President of the All India Muslim Jamaat, has termed her participation in Hindu religious rituals as impermissible under Islamic law and urged her to seek forgiveness.
The Bareilly-based cleric said that a Muslim, irrespective of gender, is not permitted under Sharia to participate in the religious practices of another faith by offering prayers or performing rituals.
Responding to questions about Sara's temple visit, Razvi Barelvi said that if the actress had visited Kedarnath, offered prayers and sought blessings voluntarily, her actions would be considered sinful and haram under his interpretation of Islamic law. He also advised her to perform tauba (repentance) and seek forgiveness from Allah.
Sara Ali Khan, daughter of actors Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh, has maintained a personal connection with the Kedarnath Temple since her Bollywood debut in 2018 with the film Kedarnath, which also starred the late Sushant Singh Rajput.
Why now?
Over the years, the actress has regularly shared photographs from her visits to the Himalayan shrine, expressing her spiritual connection and reverence for the temple. During her latest visit, media reports stated that Sara participated in puja and aarti ceremonies at the Kedarnath Temple and the nearby Bhukunt Bhairav Temple.
This is not new
Her religious visits have previously attracted public debate. In 2018, right-wing groups protested against her debut film Kedarnath over its storyline. She has also faced criticism from conservative religious figures over her visits to places of worship belonging to different faiths.
