In a post, Pope Leo XIV said it has become increasingly important to distinguish between art created by humans and work produced by machines as AI continues to transform the creative sector.

“In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce,” Pope Leo XIV wrote.

The Pope said the difference between human art and machine-generated content is not limited to artistic quality. He described it as an “ontological difference” between human creativity and material generated through algorithms.

“There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others,” he said.

Pope Leo XIV emphasised that human art carries qualities that cannot be reduced to algorithmic calculations. His remarks come amid growing debate over the use of AI tools in writing, music, painting, filmmaking and other creative fields.

The Pope also called for closer cooperation between the Church, artists and cultural institutions to protect human creativity in an increasingly AI-driven world.

He said the Church wants to renew its alliance with artists and cultural institutions as part of efforts to safeguard human values and expression in the era of artificial intelligence.

The remarks highlight the wider discussion around originality, creativity and the role of humans as AI-generated content becomes increasingly common across different forms of media and culture.
