India Reaffirms Support for Afghanistan’s Sovereignty at Moscow Format Consultations

Moscow October 6: India has reaffirmed its support for Afghanistan’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity while reiterating its commitment to the welfare of the Afghan people at the 8th Moscow Format Consultations on Afghanistan held in Moscow.

The Indian delegation at the consultations was led by Ambassador to Russia Vinay Kumar and Joint Secretary (PAI) Dr M. Suresh Kumar. The meeting brought together representatives from Russia, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
 
Afghanistan was represented by Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, while Belarus and Egypt participated in the consultations as guest countries.
 
According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, participating countries reaffirmed the importance of developing cooperation with Kabul on an equal and mutually beneficial basis. They also supported efforts to facilitate Afghanistan’s integration into the global economy.
 
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said the Moscow Format brings together countries seeking equal and mutually beneficial partnerships with Afghanistan.
 
 
 
The consultations focused on regional cooperation and the need to support stability and economic development in Afghanistan. India has consistently maintained that peace, stability and prosperity in Afghanistan are important for the wider region.
 
The Moscow Format was established in 2017 as a regional platform to discuss the situation in Afghanistan and promote national reconciliation and peace in the country. It brings together Afghanistan and key regional countries to discuss political, security and economic issues concerning the country.
 
On the sidelines of the latest meeting, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also held talks with Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi. The two sides discussed bilateral cooperation as well as coordination in international and regional forums.
 
The latest consultations come amid continued efforts by regional countries to engage with Afghanistan and encourage its economic integration and stability while addressing wider regional concerns.
