HYDERABAD: Muslim bouncers in Hyderabad have alleged that they are being denied employment at Dandiya and Navratri events in the city on religious grounds, prompting calls for government and police intervention.

A collective of around 200 bouncers claimed that organisers of several Dandiya events had told them that Muslim security personnel were no longer welcome. Mohammed Feroz, a member of the collective, said that his team had earlier secured contracts for several events but was facing difficulties this year. He said the work involved crowd management and security and that selection should be based on professional qualifications rather than religion.

According to the bouncers, the practice began on a limited scale in 2024 but has now become more widespread. They alleged that some organisers were specifically asking for non-Muslim security personnel and bouncers for the nine-day Navratri celebrations.

The issue came to the fore after Telangana Bajrang Dal leaders publicly called on Dandiya organisers not to employ non-Hindu security personnel. Bajrang Dal Telangana convenor Siva Ramulu had made a similar appeal in 2024, asking organisers not to employ people from other faiths as bouncers and security staff at Navratri events.

The bouncers have appealed to the Telangana government and police to intervene, arguing that religion should not determine access to employment.

A number of Hindu colleagues of the Muslim bouncers have also opposed discrimination and appealed to organisers to assess security personnel on professional standards.
