Accra , October 8: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar received Ghana’s formal Instrument of Acceptance for the India-led International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) during his official visit to Accra, marking another step in strengthening cooperation between India and the West African nation.
The IBCA brings together big cat range countries, countries interested in wildlife conservation, scientific institutions, conservation organisations and private sector partners. The alliance aims to promote cooperation, share expertise and strengthen conservation efforts for major big cat species and their habitats.
During his visit, Jaishankar also paid tribute to Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s founding father and first President, at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial in Accra. He laid a wreath at the memorial and highlighted Nkrumah’s contribution to anti-colonialism, African unity and the values of dignity and freedom.
Jaishankar said the memorial also served as a reminder of the importance of stronger South-South cooperation between developing countries.
Jaishankar held wide-ranging discussions with Ghanaian Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa on strengthening the bilateral partnership. The two sides discussed cooperation in trade, investments, pharmaceuticals, development assistance, capacity building, defence, technology and people-to-people ties.
Both ministers also discussed greater coordination in multilateral forums and deeper Indian engagement with the African Union and ECOWAS.
The External Affairs Minister also interacted with Ghanaian alumni of the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) programme. He highlighted capacity building and skill development as important parts of India’s development partnership with countries of the Global South.
Through ITEC, professionals from Ghana and other developing countries receive training and technical expertise across various fields, helping strengthen long-term institutional and people-to-people connections.
Jaishankar arrived in Accra on Tuesday as part of his five-day official visit to Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire and Ethiopia, aimed at further strengthening India’s engagement with the three African nations.
