- Kajal BhaleraoSome dreams grow quietly far away from bright stadium lights, beyond the reach of cameras and applause. In the heart of India’s tribal lands, where childhood is often balanced between tradition and struggle, countless young talents have always run faster, jumped higher, and played harder yet remained unseen.
For the first time, the story has changed. On the national mainstream, they have brought these hidden dreams into the spotlight, giving tribal children not just a platform, but a voice, a chance to be seen, to be celebrated, and to believe that their journey matters. With this vision in mind, “Khelo India Tribal Games” has been launched to strengthen the country’s sporting culture, especially among tribal youth. This is the beginning of recognition, dignity, and hope for a generation that has waited far too long.
The Khelo India ApproachBeing held from 25th March to 3rd April 2026, the inaugural marks a historic moment as India’s first-ever national multi-sport event dedicated to tribal athletes. Hosted in Chhattisgarh across Raipur, Jagdalpur and Surguja, the Games have brought together thousands of tribal athletes from every corner of the country onto a national stage.
The Games feature seven medal sports along with demonstration events that celebrate indigenous sporting traditions, reminding the nation that talent thrives in every community. With over 60,000 athletes representing 30 states and Union Territories, competing for 338 medals, this is a powerful step towards inclusion, recognition and pride.
Impact of Khelo India Tribal Games Sports play a significant role for tribal children growing up in areas marred by decades of Naxalism, giving them structure, ambition and a wider world to aim for.
What truly sets this initiative apart is its commitment to inclusion. It reaches out to regions and communities where opportunities have often been limited, ensuring that talent no matter where it comes from is given a chance to shine. In this journey, promoting sports among tribal communities marks a significant and meaningful step forward.
For example, in Bastar's Abujhmarh, a region long associated with remoteness, insurgency and missed opportunities, a quiet football revolution is unfolding whose impact is being witnessed in the ongoing event of Khela India Tribal Games.
Under the Khelo India umbrella, several national-level events such as the Youth Games, University Games, Beach Games, and Winter Games have already created platforms for young athletes across the country. The addition of the Khelo India Tribal Games as a new vertical not only expands this vision but also brings long-overdue recognition to tribal athletes. At the same time, it celebrates and preserves India’s rich heritage of indigenous sports bridging tradition with opportunity, and talent with recognition.

Sports Infrastructure under Khelo IndiaAcross the country, covering all States and Union Territories, the Khelo India Programme has significantly expanded sports infrastructure, laying the foundation for a stronger sporting ecosystem. So far, a total of 344 projects have been sanctioned, representing a financial commitment of 3,158.15 crore, out of which 2,730.95 crore has already been released, reflecting steady and sustained progress in implementation.
This expansion spans a wide range of facilities, including 126 multipurpose halls, 64 athletic tracks, 25 football fields, 29 hockey fields, 16 swimming pools, and 84 other sports infrastructure projects. Together, these developments have played a crucial role in extending access to quality sporting facilities beyond traditional urban centres.
In states like Chhattisgarh and other tribal regions, such investments are particularly transformative. They bring organised sport closer to communities that were once on the margins, creating opportunities where there were few. More importantly, this growing infrastructure forms the backbone for initiatives like the Khelo India Tribal Games linking access with participation, and participation with long-term talent development.
Achievement of Athletes under Khelo India
The Khelo India Programme is steadily transforming India’s sporting landscape by identifying talent at the grassroots and supporting athletes across disciplines to compete and excel at higher levels. The achievements emerging from Khelo India Centres (KICs) reflect not only the depth of talent but also its growing diversity across the country.
From Jammu and Kashmir, gymnasts led by Triza Balal delivered impressive performances at the National Sub-Junior Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships, winning multiple medals across events. In kabaddi, players like Shahid Zahoor and Nazia Lateef earned selection for the Sub-Junior National Championship, reflecting increasing representation from remote and previously underrepresented areas.
In Kerala, athletes such as Ahanaf PK in boxing and Harinandan PA in swimming secured state-level gold medals and progressed to national competitions. Similarly, in Punjab, athletes like Bramjot Kaur have consistently achieved podium finishes in athletics.
Across disciplines from athletics and boxing to kabaddi, gymnastics, and rugby these achievements signal a clear shift. Athletes from smaller towns and underserved regions are no longer confined to local platforms; they are stepping confidently onto national stages.
In this evolving landscape, the Khelo India Tribal Games further strengthen this pathway by creating a dedicated platform to identify and nurture talent from tribal communities, connecting them to India’s broader sporting ecosystem.
As the first national multi-sport event dedicated to tribal communities, the Khelo India Tribal Games are doing something far deeper than simply crowning champions. They are creating space for participation, for confidence, and for connection, allowing young athletes to step into environments where their abilities are finally recognised and valued.
