Hindus in Assam's rehab forced to consume beef, convert to Islam; accused Zahirul Sheikh absconding

Days after the modus operandi of Love Jihad, Corporate Jihad, and Gym Jihad got exposed, a novel locational jihad has come to the fore. In the Gauripur region of the Dhubri district of Assam, Hindu youths undergoing treatment in the ‘Nibaran’ rehabilitation centre are forced to eat beef and threatened to convert their religion to Islam.
The prime accused has been identified as Zahirul Sheikh and is currently absconding.
As per the local reports, the Hindu youths who refuse to consume beef by the staff and management are brutally assaulted and are tortured to do extra chores deliberately, like sweeping floors, washing utensils, and cleaning toilets, washing the clothes of the staff and owners.
The incident came to light on 24th April, 2026, when 5 Hindus residing within the rehab attempted to flee from the premises after being forced to consume beef.
The youths attempted to jump from the window of the 5th floor of the building. Three of them were reported to have sustained critical injuries, after which the police were informed. Taking cognizance of the event, the police conducted a raid around 11:00 pm on Friday.
The video of the incident is making the rounds on social media. It has also been reported that around 6 people linked to the rehab centre have been arrested, and 9 patients have been rescued.
According to reports, the management allegedly charged the victims’ families Rs 12,000 per month while spending only around Rs 2,000 on their care. Hindu patients admitted to the rehabilitation centre were reportedly denied treatment for skin conditions such as scabies.
One of the victims, while talking to the media, stated that they were beaten on their feet using hollow pipes and iron rods on refusal to eat beef.
Notably, last year, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma had issued shoot-at-sight orders in Dhubri after a cow's head was found in front of a Hanuman temple. He had indicated that the 'new beef mafia' was expanding in the region and trading cattle extensively. He also affirmed that his government would not tolerate any communal disturbances in the region.
