In a significant political development in West Bengal, the BJP-led board at Rampurhat Municipality replaced photographs of former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee with portraits of Bharat Mata and Prime Minister Narendra Modi inside the municipal office.
Visuals circulating on social media showed the newly installed images at the municipality's premises with BJP workers raising slogans like 'Jai Shri Ram' and 'Bharat Mata ki jay'. The move comes days after the Bharatiya Janata Party formed the government in West Bengal following the 2026 Assembly elections.
The development is being viewed as part of the larger symbolic and administrative changes taking place across the state after the change in power. Several reports have also highlighted changes in government offices and official spaces after the BJP assumed office in Bengal.

Rampurhat Municipality, located in Birbhum district, has now become the latest political flashpoint amid the ongoing transition. Supporters of the BJP hailed the move as a reflection of “national pride” and a “new political era” in Bengal, while critics accused the party of attempting to erase the previous government’s legacy.
Social media posts and videos related to the incident have gone viral, with users sharing visuals from inside the municipal office showing portraits of Bharat Mata and PM Modi replacing images associated with the previous Trinamool Congress administration. The BJP’s victory in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections marked the end of the Trinamool Congress’s 15-year rule in the state, with BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari taking charge as Chief Minister.
