Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a crucial five-nation diplomatic tour from May 15 to May 20, beginning with the United Arab Emirates before heading to the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Italy. The high-profile visit comes at a time when the ongoing West Asia crisis has triggered concerns over global energy security, supply chains, and rising crude oil prices, making the trip strategically significant for India.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the tour will focus on strengthening India’s partnerships in energy security, trade, defence, technology, semiconductors, green transition, and investment cooperation. Officials said the visit also comes in the backdrop of the recently concluded India-European Union Free Trade Agreement and the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement.

UAE visit amid West Asia turmoil

PM Modi’s first stop will be the UAE, where he is scheduled to meet UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. During this visit, discussions are expected to focus heavily on energy cooperation and regional security as tensions in West Asia continue to disrupt global oil markets. The UAE remains one of India’s most important energy partners, supplying a significant portion of India’s crude oil and natural gas requirements. With instability around the Strait of Hormuz and concerns over disruptions in oil transit routes, securing stable energy supplies has become a top priority for New Delhi.

The visit assumes added importance after recent attacks linked to the regional conflict reportedly affected infrastructure in the Gulf region and raised fears of wider escalation. As per the reports, India, which imports nearly 90% of its crude oil needs, is closely monitoring the situation.

Focus on Europe: Trade, Technology, and Green Energy

Following the UAE visit, PM Modi will travel to the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Italy. Officials say the European leg of the tour is designed to deepen India’s engagement with advanced economies in areas such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, clean energy, digital infrastructure, and resilient supply chains.

In the Netherlands, discussions are expected around semiconductor cooperation and advanced manufacturing. India has been keen to strengthen ties with Dutch technology firms, particularly in chip-making equipment and emerging technologies.

During the Sweden and Norway visits, PM Modi is expected to participate in the third India-Nordic Summit. The Nordic countries are seen as key partners for India in renewable energy, green hydrogen, electric mobility, climate innovation, and sustainable industrial technology.

Norway is also expected to discuss cooperation in the “Blue Economy,” offshore wind energy, Arctic research, and carbon capture technologies. This will be the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Norway in more than four decades.

The final leg of the tour in Italy will include talks with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, where both sides are likely to review defence ties, industrial cooperation, and the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC).

How will this 5-nation tour help India

The five-nation tour is being viewed as one of India’s most important diplomatic engagements of the year because of the timing and the geopolitical environment.

1. Strengthening energy security

The UAE visit could help India secure long-term oil and gas supply arrangements at a time of volatile crude prices. Stable energy imports are crucial for controlling inflation and protecting India’s economy from external shocks.

2. Boosting trade and investment

The Europe outreach is expected to open new investment opportunities in manufacturing, technology, and infrastructure, especially after the India-EU and India-EFTA trade agreements.

3. Semiconductor and technology partnerships

India is aggressively pushing semiconductor manufacturing and AI capabilities. Partnerships with the Netherlands and Nordic countries can support India’s ambitions to become a global technology and electronics hub.

4. Green transition and clean energy

Sweden and Norway are global leaders in clean energy innovation. Cooperation in electric mobility, green hydrogen, battery technology, and offshore wind could help India accelerate its renewable energy targets.

5. Strategic positioning amid global uncertainty

The tour also signals India’s effort to maintain strong ties with both Gulf nations and Europe while navigating the sensitive geopolitical situation in West Asia. Analysts believe the visit strengthens India’s image as a major global diplomatic player capable of balancing strategic relationships across regions.
