The Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) of Bihar has
arrested a Muzaffarpur resident, Mohammad Mustafa, on charges of espionage and anti-national activities, officials announced on May 22.
Mustafa was apprehended during a raid in Ratanpur village, Muzaffarpur district, following a tip-off received by the ATS Special Intelligence Unit. Authorities allege he was actively working for anti-India forces and maintaining direct contact with Shahzad Bhatti, a Pakistan-based arms smuggler, along with his associates.
Investigators claim to have recovered significant digital evidence from the accused's mobile phone, including images and videos of sensitive and strategically important locations across India. According to the ATS, Mustafa allegedly filmed restricted areas and transmitted their precise geographical coordinates to his Pakistani handlers through social media platforms and encrypted messaging applications.
"The digital evidence recovered points to a deliberate conspiracy aimed at compromising India's national security," the ATS stated.
A comprehensive investigation is currently underway, covering Mustafa's travel history, financial transactions, call records, social media activity, and potential international connections. Authorities are also working to identify any associates and determine the extent of foreign funding involved.
A case has been registered against the accused under sections of espionage and activities against national security.
This arrest is part of a broader pattern of recent crackdowns on alleged Pakistan-linked espionage networks across India. Previously, Naushad Ali was arrested in Faridabad in connection with a network accused of transmitting sensitive data to Pakistan.
In another case, the NIA on May 20 arrested Kolkata resident Zafar Riaz alias Rizvi, who allegedly conducted espionage on behalf of Pakistani intelligence officers, passed confidential security information, and had prior convictions under the Official Secrets Act. He has been booked under the BNS, the Official Secrets Act, and the UAPA.
