The personal assistant of West Bengal BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari was shot dead in Madhyamgram, just two days after the party’s historic victory in the assembly elections. The victim, identified as Chandranath Rath, was travelling in a moving car when assailants in another vehicle allegedly followed him and opened fire. Of the four bullets fired, three struck Rath after the car slowed down.
Visuals from the scene showed the left front window of the vehicle
shattered with multiple bullet marks. Rath had worked closely with Suvendu Adhikari for several years and was known to handle the BJP leader’s political coordination and other key responsibilities. He was regarded as a trusted member of Adhikari’s inner circle.
Following the attack, Suvendu Adhikari
rushed to the hospital in Madhyamgram, where the police took Rath’s body. The driver of the vehicle, identified as Buddhadeb, also sustained injuries in the firing and was admitted to a nearby hospital. The incident took place in the North 24 Parganas district near Kolkata.
According to Adhikari’s brother, Dibyendu Adhikari, the BJP leader was not travelling with Rath at the time of the attack. He demanded a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and alleged the involvement of the Trinamool Congress in the killing. BJP leader Nikhil Prasun described the incident as a reflection of the “culture of violence” in the state and called for a thorough investigation, claiming there may be a larger conspiracy behind the murder.
Suvendu Adhikari termed the incident a “cold-blooded murder” and alleged that the attackers had conducted prior reconnaissance before carrying out the shooting. Speaking to reporters outside the hospital where Rath was taken after the attack, Adhikari said the incident was "heart-wrenching".
"The incident is heart-wrenching; we condemn the incident," the BJP leader said. "The way the attack was executed clearly suggests that the assailants had done a recce beforehand," he alleged. BJP leader Devdas Mondal accused the Trinamool of killing an "innocent man". "We will identify the accused and bring them to justice," he told the media.
The Trinamool Congress, meanwhile, in a post on X, condemned the murder and blatantly alleged "BJP-backed miscreants" have been carrying out post-poll violence over the last three days. The Trinamool's Rathin Ghosh had won from Madhyamgram by 2,399 votes amid a strong BJP challenge.

The killing of Adhikari's PA comes on a day when the BJP alleged Trinamool Congress workers impersonating as BJP supporters have been trying to incite violence. Videos on social media showed sporadic incidents of groups going around breaking public property. Kolkata Police chief Ajay Kumar Nand said at least 80 people were arrested, 65 of whom were taken into custody in specific cases, while 15 others were detained as a preventive measure.
It is important to note that several BJP workers, like Madhu Mondal and Jadav Bar, were brutally murdered allegedly by the TMC workers for celebrating the landslide victory of the BJP in the state. These incidents have sent shockwaves across the state and political parties.
