A building that served as the divisional office of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) for the last 31 years has been vacated and handed over to the Agriculture Department in Saharanpur on June 12, 2026.
The building is located opposite Janakpuri Police Station on Dehradun Road and originally functioned as a Government Agricultural Seed Store after Independence.
According to officials, one room of the building was temporarily allotted to Janakpuri Police Station in 1981-82 under the orders of the District Magistrate. After the police station shifted to a new building in 1993, the premises were later used as the office of the Circle Officer (City-II).
In 1995, BSP obtained two rooms of the building on lease through an agreement with the Deputy Director of Agriculture. Over the years, the entire premises came to be used as the BSP divisional office.
The Agriculture Department sought the return of the property for official use and, on April 23 this year, the District Magistrate ordered that the building be handed back to the department.
Earlier, in January 2025, the department had issued a notice to BSP asking it to vacate the premises within two months. However, the office was not vacated immediately and the party approached the court seeking relief. The lower court rejected the plea, following which the matter reached the District Judge's court.
Later, both sides reached a mutual understanding and BSP officials formally handed over possession of the building to the Agriculture Department on Thursday, June 12.
District Agriculture Officer Kapil Kumar said the department would seek permission from the District Magistrate to shift its district office from Vikas Bhawan to the building. If approval is not granted, the premises will be used again as a Government Agricultural Seed Store.
BSP district president Rajneesh Bandhu said the office was associated with many memories and had witnessed four BSP governments between 1995 and 2012. He said the party had always maintained that no one's property should be occupied illegally. According to him, the office had been functioning on rent and has now been shifted to a new party office on Malhipur Road.
With the handover completed, the Agriculture Department has regained possession of the property after more than three decades.
