Police in Chhattisgarh's Janjgir-Champa district have arrested a pastor and a homeowner following allegations of religious
conversion attempts during a prayer meeting organised in Udayband village.
The accused have been identified as Pastor Rathram Mahilange, 38, and homeowner Badrinath Bareth, 40.
The action was taken after members of a Hindu organisation submitted a complaint alleging that villagers were being lured to a "healing prayer meeting" with promises of miraculous cures.
What happened?
According to the complaint, a "Changai Sabha" was organised on Thursday (June 11) morning at Badrinath Bareth's house in the Gudipara area of Udayband village under the City Kotwali police station limits.
Men and women from nearby villages attended the gathering.
Members of the Hindu Jagran Manch alleged that people were invited on the pretext of treatment for illnesses and were told that their diseases could be cured by drinking special "miracle water".
The complainants further alleged that Christian religious teachings were promoted during the event and that Bibles and other religious literature were distributed among attendees.

Allegations against the pastor
According to the complaint, Pastor Rathram Mahilange allegedly made objectionable remarks about Hindu deities during the gathering.
Witnesses and complainants alleged that the pastor told attendees that Lord Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma could not help them, while "two sips of water given by Jesus Christ" could cure all diseases.
A video purportedly showing parts of the event has also surfaced and is being circulated on social media.
The remarks sparked protests from local Hindu activists, who accused the organisers of insulting Hindu beliefs and attempting to influence villagers in the name of faith healing.
How did the matter come to light?
Satish Soni of the Hindu Jagran Manch said he received information about the meeting from local residents.
He and other activists reached the venue and alleged that villagers were being persuaded through promises of healing and religious messaging.
The organisation subsequently submitted a written complaint to the police demanding action against the organisers.
Police action
Based on the complaint, City Kotwali police registered a case and began an investigation.
Police also seized religious literature from the location.
Authorities booked Pastor Rathram Mahilange and homeowner Badrinath Bareth under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Sections 299 and 3(5).
Both accused were arrested and later sent to judicial remand.
What did police say?
CSP Yogitabali Khaparde confirmed that a prayer meeting had been organised at a house in Udayband village.
According to the police officer, Pastor Rathram Mahilange was addressing attendees about Christianity when the alleged remarks regarding Hindu deities were made.
