A nine-year-old interfaith marriage in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao district has become the centre of a criminal investigation after a Hindu man was abducted, beaten and pressured to convert to Islam by members of his wife's family.

According to FIR No. 355/2026 registered at Kotwali Police Station, Unnao, on June 13, the complaint was lodged by Roshni, a Muslim woman who married Raja Tiwari approximately nine years ago according to Hindu customs.

The complainant stated that after the marriage, her family members never accepted the relationship and severed ties with her. Despite the family's opposition, the couple continued to live together as husband and wife.

What the FIR says?

According to the complaint, on June 12 several of Roshni's relatives, including her cousins Nabi Alam, Ronak and Nabi Sher, along with other associates, allegedly intercepted Raja Tiwari and forcibly took him away.

The FIR alleges that the accused assaulted Raja Tiwari with sticks and physically dragged him to a mosque.

There, according to the complaint, he was pressured to abandon his faith and convert to Islam.

The complaint further alleges that attempts were made to force him to consume beef and undergo circumcision as part of the conversion process.

When Raja opposed the alleged attempts, the accused allegedly assaulted him, causing injuries.

Wife details years of family opposition

In her complaint, Roshni told police that she had married Raja Tiwari nearly nine years ago according to Hindu rituals and had been living with him ever since.

She alleged that her relatives never reconciled with the marriage and continued to harbour resentment against the couple.

The June 12 incident, according to the complaint, was the culmination of years of hostility over the interfaith union.

Acting on the complaint, police registered FIR No. 355/2026 under Sections 115(2), 352 and 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Police officials stated that an investigation has been initiated and statements of the complainant, the victim and other witnesses are being recorded.

According to local reports, three accused have been taken into custody while the role of other individuals named in the complaint is also being examined.

Officials have stated that further legal action will be taken on the basis of evidence collected during the investigation.

Another conversion controversy in Uttar Pradesh

The Unnao incident comes amid continuing investigations into alleged unlawful conversion cases in Uttar Pradesh.

Recently, a case from Shamli district attracted national attention after businessman Ayush Malik allegedly came into contact with Chandni Qureshi and later adopted the Islamic name Ali Mohammad.

According to the complaint filed by his family, Ayush's association with Chandni Qureshi allegedly led to his religious conversion and nikah. The case resulted in the arrest of Chandni Qureshi and her father, Islam Qureshi, with police invoking provisions of the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act.

While the facts and circumstances of the two cases differ, both incidents have reignited debate over allegations of coercion, conversion and familial pressure in interfaith relationships.

For now, the allegations in the Unnao case remain under investigation, and police say conclusions will be drawn only after examination of witness statements, medical evidence and other material collected during the probe.
