Jahangir Khan, TMC goon from Falta in West Bengal, was publicly paraded by law enforcement authorities for the second time in recent days. Dressed in shorts and a T-shirt, Khan was seen walking with his hands folded in apology, his head bowed, and repeatedly pulling his ears. A rope was tied around his waist and held by an official as armed personnel pulled him through the streets.

The video of the incident is making rounds on social media, with netizens making fun of him. "Instead of bending, Pushpa has now started to crawl. In shorts & with folded hands, Jahangir Khan was paraded by Police yesterday in Falta," one of the users said.

"There was a time when he ruled this region, called himself Pushpa, and was threatening an IPS officer just a few weeks ago. Today, look where he stands," another read.

Why was Khan arrested?

Khan has been booked on multiple charges, including extortion, land grabbing, assault, and other criminal offences. According to investigators, he attempted to flee the country but was apprehended near Panitanki on the India-Nepal border by the Special Task Force (STF). Subsequently, the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Diamond Harbour remanded him to five days of police custody.

Notably, this is the second time Khan has been paraded on the streets after his arrest. A similar scene unfolded on June 11 when Khan was taken through several locations in Falta, South 24 Parganas, in connection with a case related to post-election violence following the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections. Accompanied by police personnel and teams from the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), he was brought to Sahararhat and nearby areas to help investigators reconstruct events linked to the case.

During the exercise, Khan was dressed in Bermuda shorts and a white T-shirt and was moved under heavy security. The area was secured with a strong police presence and multiple vehicles, while large crowds gathered to witness the proceedings. Khan, who had likened himself to the fictional character Pushpa during the election campaign, finished fourth in the Falta Assembly repoll held on May 21. He had withdrawn from the contest only days before polling.

On May 19, while announcing that he was withdrawing from the contest, he claimed that Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari had assured a “special package” for the constituency. Khan, while talking to the media, said, "I am the son of Falta, and I want Falta to be at peace and grow. Our CM Suvendu Adhikari is giving a special package for the development of Falta, which is why I am separating myself from the re-polling of the constituency."

The Calcutta High Court had on May 26 vacated an interim protection granted to Khan, against whom seven FIRs were registered at Falta police station in South 24 Parganas district. The high court granted protection from coercive action on May 18, only for Khan to participate in the repoll at Falta on May 21, the result of which was declared on May 24.

Though Khan had prayed for and received interim protection from the high court on May 18 to participate in the repoll process and campaign for it, the very next day, he publicly announced his withdrawal from the contest.
