A troubling video from Punjab has been circulating on social media, showing an individual dressed in traditional Nihang Sikh attire walking through a busy public space at night, carrying a stick and allegedly assaulting a 'woman'. The footage, which could not be independently verified, has sparked widespread concern and outrage among viewers online. The man in the video can be seen hitting a 'woman' with a stick, in an act that looks like making her flee.
People posted a video alleging that Nihang Sikhs were creating a nuisance in public places. "Why the long rope to them in Uttarakhand? They are creating a nuisance in Public Places. Being a Nihang does not give them the right to take law and order into their hands!"Jaipur Dialogue said.
"Shocking visuals. A man dressed as a Nihang is seen assaulting a woman with a stick. Uttarakhand dealt with them cautiously, and the issue got resolved. India has already seen how an aggressive action allows it to cultivate a MARTYR IMAGE & mobilize support. Amritpal is an example," another
video read.
As per the initial information, the video was first
posted by a user named Siddharth Bakaria on Twitter (X). "Punjab giving competition to Seria," he said, indicating that the video was from Punjab and not Uttarakhand.
Later, several individuals on social media claimed that the women were transgender and that they had been harassing the Sikh devotees, and that the video roaming around the internet was old. The authenticity of the current viral video is questionable, but the reason why this is getting viral at present is a recent Nihang Sikh dispute that happened in Uttarakhand.
This incident is believed to follow a violent
confrontation that erupted on June 16 in Karnaprayag, stemming from what was initially a minor parking dispute between Nihang Sikh pilgrims, who were returning from the sacred shrine of Hemkund Sahib, and residents. The disagreement rapidly escalated into a physical clash involving swords and sticks, leaving several locals and some pilgrims injured.
Four Nihang Sikhs were subsequently arrested in connection with the alleged sword attack. Tensions were further inflamed when supporters gathered on the rooftop of a gurdwara in Rudraprayag, demanding the release of the detained individuals, resulting in a prolonged and tense standoff with law enforcement.
Indian Sikh Organization demands protection, evacuation of NihangsMeanwhile, Salvinder Singh Kalsi, State President of the Indian Sikh Organization, held a press conference and urged the administration to ensure the safety of the Nihang Sikhs present there and facilitate their secure evacuation. He stated that the Nihang Sikhs sheltering on the third floor of the gurdwara have been continuously appealing for protection.
At the press conference held on Tuesday, June 23, State President Kalsi
alleged that deliberate attempts are being made to tarnish the image of the Sikh organization and the broader Sikh community in connection with this entire matter. He also noted that regular religious programs are being held at the gurdwara, and the langar (community kitchen) service continues to operate without interruption for devotees.

He further alleged that certain sections of the local media are projecting a distorted and misleading portrayal of the Sikh community. Regarding the traditional weapons carried by Nihang Sikhs, he clarified that, as per Nihang tradition, Sikhs carry various types of arms strictly for self-defense and protection. These weapons are never used for aggression, and Nihang Sikhs do not resort to their use without provocation.
He appealed to the administration to take impartial action and resolve the entire matter through dialogue and peaceful means. Several office bearers of the organization were present at the press conference, including Santosh Singh, Amandeep Singh Dhillon, and Balwinder Singh Virk.
Uttarakhand authorities have responded with measured restraint, working to bring the situation under control through peaceful means. Investigations remain underway to establish the full sequence of events, with complaints registered from both sides.
Threats issued by Nihangs? Sikhs demand state actionIt is important to reflect that India's unity has always been rooted in coexistence, compassion, and mutual respect across communities. Disagreements, however genuine, must never find expression through violence, particularly in pilgrimage regions that are considered sacred and welcoming to all faiths. The men in Nihang attire could be clearly seen creating a nuisance in public places, especially against women. Does being Nihang give them the right to take law and order into their hands?
After the incident, another video of Nihang Sikhs is making rounds on social media in which a man dressed in Nihang attire can be seen issuing a threat to the Uttarakhand CM. "You, your police department, your CM, and anyone else can bring lakhs of people, but our vehicle will definitely go to Uttarakhand on June 25th," the man in the video can be heard saying.

For more than three centuries, Nihangs have occupied a unique position within Sikhism as a warrior order founded during a period when the Sikh community faced repeated persecution and wars were thrust upon it. Revered by many as the guardians of Khalsa martial traditions and viewed with fear by others because of their militant image, the Nihangs have long stood at the intersection of faith, military power, and political authority.
The Nihangs stand out because of their blue dress, their dumalla turbans, and their weapons. In the given case, Uttarakhand authorities have responded with measured restraint, working to bring the situation under control through peaceful means.
