A disturbance erupted on Sunday, June 28, at a gurdwara in Mohali during a felicitation ceremony
organised to welcome Nihang Sikhs who had returned to Punjab following their release from custody in Uttarakhand. An individual in attendance allegedly attempted to attack Nihang Baba Jasdeep Singh during the event.
The ceremony was being
held at Gurdwara Singh Shaheeda in Sohana, Mohali, to honour the Nihang Sikhs who had recently been granted bail by a court in connection with the June 16 assault case in Karnaprayag, Uttarakhand. As siropas were being presented to the returnees and the congregation raised religious slogans, a man suddenly lunged from the crowd and allegedly tried to assault Baba Jasdeep Singh. He was swiftly restrained and detained by Nihang Sikhs and others present at the venue.
Massive chaos erupted at the scene after the incident, with local police arriving at the scene shortly after and confirming that the situation had been brought under control. Authorities stated they were in ongoing contact with the gurdwara management and that while no formal complaint had been received, appropriate action would follow if one were filed.
A district court in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district had granted bail on Saturday to four Nihang Sikhs who had been held in judicial custody following the Karnaprayag incident. The bail was approved by District and Sessions Judge Bindhyachal Singh in Gopeshwar, with the court clarifying that legal proceedings in the matter would continue as per the law.
This incident is believed to follow a violent confrontation that erupted on June 16 in Karnaprayag, stemming from what was initially a minor parking dispute between Nihang Sikh pilgrims, who were returning from the sacred shrine of Hemkund Sahib, and residents. The disagreement rapidly escalated into a physical clash involving swords and sticks, leaving several locals and some pilgrims injured.
Four Nihang Sikhs were subsequently
arrested in connection with the alleged sword attack. Tensions were further inflamed when supporters gathered on the rooftop of a gurdwara in Rudraprayag, demanding the release of the detained individuals, resulting in a prolonged and tense standoff with law enforcement.
Meanwhile, Salvinder Singh Kalsi, State President of the Indian Sikh Organization, had
held a press conference and urged the administration to ensure the safety of the Nihang Sikhs present there and facilitate their secure evacuation. He stated that the Nihang Sikhs sheltering on the third floor of the gurdwara have been continuously appealing for protection.
He had
appealed to the administration to take impartial action and resolve the entire matter through dialogue and peaceful means. Several office bearers of the organization were present at the press conference, including Santosh Singh, Amandeep Singh Dhillon, and Balwinder Singh Virk.
Uttarakhand authorities had back then responded with measured restraint, working to bring the situation under control through peaceful means.
