Tension prevailed in Narayanpet town, Telangana, after the death by suicide of a teenage girl led to protests and a bandh call by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP). The organizations
stated that the case was connected to
love jihad. Police, however, state that these 'claims' are still under investigation and have not been substantiated.
According to
reports, the BJP and other Hindu leaders protesting for justice say that the deceased teenager was deceptively dragged into a relationship by an 18-year-old man identified as Fasiuddin. He later forced her to convert to Islam and also used blackmailing tactics, following which she allegedly committed suicide.
Following the incident, police arrested the accused and presented him before a court, which remanded him to judicial custody. A case has been registered against him under charges of abetment to suicide as well as relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
The BJP and the VHP groups protesting over the incident in Narayanpet have demanded a detailed inquiry and strict action against those found responsible. The police allegedly disrupted the peaceful protests, and several Hindu protestors have been detained.
The city remained shut as a part of the ongoing protest, following which the authorities increased security in sensitive areas and conducted regular patrols to maintain law and order and prevent any communal tensions.
During the protests, several right-wing leaders alleged that the accused had gained the teenager’s trust by promising marriage and later pressured her to convert her religion and marry according to Muslim customs. Senior BJP leader Nagurao Namaji claimed that Hindu girls were being targeted through deceptive relationships and further alleged that the teenager had been subjected to blackmail before her death.
Demanding justice, BJP leaders called for a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the case and stringent punishment for anyone found guilty. Protesters also urged authorities to strengthen measures aimed at protecting young women from exploitation and to ensure a speedy completion of the inquiry.
Police, however, stated that the protesters were protesting over 'unverified claims'. Officials stressed that the investigation is ongoing and that all aspects of the case are being examined. Notably, authorities have not confirmed allegations related to forced religious
conversion, blackmail, or other claims made by protesting groups. Investigators are currently collecting evidence and recording statements to establish the facts surrounding the teenager’s death.
