Ayush Malik, a resident of Shamli whose conversion to Islam had triggered an investigation under Uttar Pradesh's anti-conversion law, has now reverted to Hinduism. As per the
reports, it is believed that he decided on his own to embrace Hinduism again after recognizing how much emotional distress his earlier conversion had caused his parents.
A video circulating on social media shows Ayush taking part in Hindu rituals and prayers. In it, he states that he has willingly chosen to
return to Sanatan Dharma and wants to be with his family. "I had accepted Islam and changed my religion. But after seeing my parents' pain and keeping my family in mind, I have voluntarily returned to Hinduism. I want to live under the care and protection of my family," he says.

His father, Devaraj Malik, confirmed that his son had officially rejoined Sanatan Dharma, with the family adding throughout that this was Ayush's own choice. This comes just weeks after Uttar Pradesh Police took physiotherapist Chandni Qureshi and her father, Islam Qureshi, into custody, acting on a complaint Devaraj Malik had filed under the state's Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act.
The complaint states that Ayush, who holds a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree and worked at his family's medical store, first encountered Chandni in 2018 when he was being treated for a leg injury at a hospital in Shamli. As per the police, the two went on to form a relationship, and Chandni, along with her relatives,
pressured him into converting to Islam.
Meanwhile, while his family
maintained that Ayush Malik was targeted and brainwashed into converting to Islam by Chandni Qureshi and her family, Ayush had claimed that he had converted to Islam out of his own free will. Speaking to the media on June 8, he had said that he had been practising Islam since 2008. However, he kept his conversion and Nikah hidden from everyone, including his family, so as not to adversely affect the marriage prospects of his sisters. He informed his family about his conversion and Nikah after his sisters got married.
According to Ayush, he used to watch the videos of Pakistani Islamic scholar Dr Israr Ahmed and was deeply influenced by the Islamic ideology. He said that he started watching the videos at a time when he was going through mental and health-related issues and found them comforting. Ayush said that he found Dr Israr Ahmed’s teachings convincing and that he did not come across any counter to them. He rejected the claims of being brainwashed and blackmailed into converting to Islam. Regarding the FIR filed by his father, Ayush said his father acted under social pressure.
According to the FIR, Ayush was brought to Delhi in 2023, where he converted and took the name Mohammad Ali, with a nikah said to have taken place there as well. Police, however, noted that no marriage certificate has surfaced during their investigation. Investigators further stated that following his conversion, Ayush adopted Islamic practices, such as praying five times daily, growing out his beard, and changing how he dressed.
Devaraj Malik had alleged that the entire conversion was orchestrated as part of a scheme to seize control of the family's property, which he says is worth several crores of rupees. A detailed report regarding the same can be read here.
