Assistant Commissioner of Police (Sadar) Dharambir Singh told reporters at the scene that the accused began shooting at the businessman's home using high-grade weapons upon police arrival. He added that when officers confronted them, the suspects turned their fire on the police, prompting officers to respond in self-defence.

Gurugram Police said the control room had tipped off the Crime Branch about armed men travelling in a suspicious Scorpio SUV. By the time the team arrived at Sushant Lok, the suspects were already firing automatic weapons at the businessman's residence.

Who is Deepak Nandal, and why is his gang notorious

According to reports, Nandal is described as having started in Haryana's music industry, working as a music producer and rapper, before shifting to running his gang from abroad after fleeing India. He's now considered one of the more prominent foreign-based gangsters operating extortion and contract-shooting rackets in the Haryana-NCR region.

His gang is linked to a pattern of extortion-driven shootings targeting businessmen, property dealers, and companies, allegedly ordering associates to fire at the homes or offices of people who refuse to pay up. Specific incidents tied to the network include a shooting at MNR Buildmark's office in Sector 45, Gurugram; an attack involving around 55-60 rounds fired at Unisys Info Solutions' office in Karnal; an attack on singer-rapper Rahul Fazilpuria near Gurgaon's Southern Peripheral Road, claimed by an alleged Nandal associate, Sunil Sardhania; the Sushant Lok firing at the residence of designer Mayank Chawla, etc.

Police say Nandal recruits shooters from within Haryana's jail system; several of his key operatives, like arrested "chief shooter" Arun Soni, reportedly connected with him while serving time for unrelated offenses (murder, arms dealing, etc.) and joined the gang after release or parole. Soni alone had at least 13 cases against him under the IPC, Arms Act, and NDPS Act before his arrest.

In short, Nandal is orchestrating a string of extortion-related shootings and intimidation attacks across Haryana and NCR while directing operations remotely from outside India, making it challenging for Indian police to apprehend him directly, even as his ground-level shooters keep getting arrested or killed in encounters.
