On Wednesday, July 15, GST Deputy Commissioner Ambika Singh was caught red-handed accepting a bribe in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. The moment the vigilance team apprehended her, she attempted to make a run for it, even getting into a scuffle with four female constables in her bid to escape.

A crowd gathered at the scene as the incident unfolded, with the officer repeatedly appealing to onlookers and passersby to help her get away. She was eventually restrained and taken into a jeep by the vigilance team, which transported her to the police station. The video of the incident is making rounds on social media.

The case traces back to Ajay Kumar Maurya, a Bajardeeha resident and director of Black Smith Industries Private Limited, who had submitted his February 2023 return and state GST filing within the deadline. The GST office, however, later flagged discrepancies and recalled the file. A field officer subsequently prepared a report for tax refund and clearance, forwarding it to Deputy Commissioner Ambika Singh.

When Ajay was summoned to discuss the file's disposal, Singh raised tax-related queries based on the report but then indicated she would reject the file rather than clear it. Upon Ajay's request for approval, she allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 50,000. When he initially resisted, she reportedly threatened departmental action against him. Eventually, Ajay agreed to pay but instead went directly to the vigilance office and reported the matter to the Superintendent of Police.

Following his complaint, Varanasi's Anti-Corruption Team launched an inquiry, which corroborated the allegations, paving the way for action against Singh.

On Wednesday at 6:30 pm, Ajay arranged to hand over the Rs 50,000 to Singh at Dada Restaurant, located near the GST Commissioner's office in the Bhelupur police station area. As she accepted the envelope of cash and attempted to leave the premises, the vigilance team swooped in and caught her in the act.

In her attempt to escape, Singh struggled with four women inspectors before being overpowered. Throughout the commotion, she pleaded with the gathered crowd for help, claiming she was being falsely implicated, but no one intervened on her behalf.

A case has since been registered against her under bribery-related provisions at the Vigilance police station in Varanasi. Investigators have indicated that other files previously cleared by Singh will now come under scrutiny as well.
