Bhopal, July 18: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Friday announced that the state government will introduce a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill in the upcoming Monsoon Session of the Assembly. He said there should be one law for all citizens and that the proposed law would ensure equal legal provisions for everyone.

Mohan Yadav says UCC will recognise only one marriage in MP

Speaking at a public event, Yadav questioned why different communities should have separate personal laws. "Why should there be separate laws for Hindus and Muslims? There should be one law for everyone. Ifc marries once, why should Rahim marry twice or four times? Muslim sisters are also our sisters," he said.

The Chief Minister said that under the proposed Uniform Civil Code, only one marriage will be legally recognised. He added that only a person with one legally recognised marriage will have the legal right to reside in Madhya Pradesh under the new law.

Referring to the ban on instant triple talaq, Yadav said the practice has already been abolished. "If anyone says 'talaq, talaq, talaq', they will be sent to jail. The era of triple talaq is over. Only one marriage will be legally recognised," he said.

Yadav said the government will first approve the Bill in the next Cabinet meeting, which is scheduled to be held at Jagdishpur in Bhopal. After Cabinet approval, the Bill will be introduced in the Assembly during the Monsoon Session.

He said the proposed law is aimed at ensuring equal treatment for all citizens. "We are bringing this law in Madhya Pradesh because there should be no discrimination among citizens. We are all the children of Mother India," he said.
A Uniform Civil Code provides a common set of civil laws for all citizens, regardless of religion, on matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption. If the Bill is passed, Madhya Pradesh will join the growing list of states moving towards implementing a Uniform Civil Code.
