Kolkata, July 18: A political controversy erupted in West Bengal , after authorities began demolishing the MP office of Trinamool Congress (TMC) National General Secretary and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee in South 24 Parganas district over alleged illegal construction.

The demolition took place at the office located on the Amtala–Baruipur Road in Amtala. Bulldozers were deployed after the administration reportedly served a notice stating that the structure had been built without the required permission.

Heavy police deployment was seen at the site to maintain law and order during the operation. Local residents and TMC supporters gathered near the office as the demolition was carried out.

The action comes days after the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) issued demolition notices for 17 properties recorded under the names of individuals linked to Abhishek Banerjee, his family members, and his company, Leaps and Bounds. One of the properties that received a notice was Banerjee's residence, 'Shantiniketan', located on Harish Mukherjee Road in Kolkata.

The controversy gained further attention after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) released a list of 43 properties that it claimed were connected to the Diamond Harbour MP. According to the BJP, the list was prepared using records from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation and included properties allegedly owned by Banerjee and his associates.

However, retired TMC Rajya Sabha MP Saket Gokhale dismissed the BJP's allegations. He stated that the civic body's database contains several individuals with the name "Abhishek Banerjee" and argued that the records do not prove that all the listed properties belong to the TMC leader.

At the time of filing this report, neither Abhishek Banerjee nor the Trinamool Congress had issued an official statement regarding the demolition of the MP office.

The latest action follows a series of property-related crackdowns involving leaders linked to the ruling Trinamool Congress. Earlier this month, authorities demolished a café in South 24 Parganas that was allegedly built on encroached land and was reportedly linked to the son of TMC leader Saokat Molla.

The demolition has triggered fresh political debate in the state, with both the ruling TMC and the opposition BJP continuing to trade allegations over property ownership and alleged irregularities.
