In a symbolic nod to the land where 'Vande Mataram' was born and became the rallying cry of India's freedom movement, one of Kolkata's most celebrated Durga Puja organisers, the Santosh Mitra Square Durga Puja Committee, has chosen the iconic national song as the central theme for its 2026 Durga Puja celebrations, coinciding with its 150th anniversary.
The announcement comes a year after the committee's widely discussed 'Operation Sindoor'-themed pandal, which emerged as one of the biggest attractions of the 2025 Durga Puja festivities. This year, the organisers say they aim to celebrate the patriotic spirit that once echoed across Bengal and inspired generations of freedom fighters.
According to the organisers, the upcoming pandal will recreate the journey of Vande Mataram and its role in India's Independence movement through immersive lighting, sound design, artistic installations and thematic presentations.
Speaking on the theme, Sajal Ghosh, president of the Santosh Mitra Square Durga Puja Committee and BJP MLA, said the committee wanted to honour the legacy of Vande Mataram, which originated in Bengal before becoming a national call for freedom.
"This is the 150th year of Vande Mataram. This is the soil where Vande Mataram was born. We want to pay tribute to it in every possible way. We have always tried to present nationalist themes through our Durga Puja. It was the clarion call that inspired India's freedom movement, and we want to portray that journey through this year's pandal," Ghosh said.
Organisers said visitors will experience key moments from India's freedom struggle through large-scale visual storytelling, bringing alive the spirit of the song that united millions during the fight against colonial rule.
The theme coincides with year-long nationwide celebrations marking 150 years of Vande Mataram. It also comes amid changing political and cultural discourse in West Bengal, where the singing of Vande Mataram has been made compulsory in schools following the change in the state government.
For many, the choice of theme represents more than a tribute to a patriotic song. It reflects an effort to reconnect Bengal's biggest cultural festival with the nationalist legacy that originated on its own soil through Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay's immortal composition.
Over the years, Santosh Mitra Square has built a reputation for creating large-scale concept-based Durga Puja pandals centred on themes of national importance. Last year's 'Operation Sindoor' installation drew nationwide attention and was inaugurated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
With preparations already underway, the committee expects the 'Vande Mataram' theme to be among the biggest attractions of Kolkata's 2026 Durga Puja, blending faith, culture and the history of India's freedom movement into a single immersive experience.
