Imran Khan's sister summoned over remarks on Indo-Pak conflict

New Delhi, July 20: Pakistan's National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has summoned Noreen Niazi, sister of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, over alleged dissemination of "false, offensive and inflammatory" content on social media aimed at defaming state institutions.

The agency has directed Niazi to appear before its Islamabad office on Monday to record her statement.

NCCIA's Allegations

According to the notice issued by the NCCIA, Niazi allegedly shared social media content that sought to spread "fake narratives" and damage the reputation of Pakistan's state institutions.

The notice stated that she had been found disseminating "false, offensive and inflammatory" content. It also warned that if she failed to appear, it would be assumed that she had nothing to present in her defence.

What Did Noreen Niazi Say?

The summons follows an interview in which Niazi made several controversial claims regarding the May 2025 India-Pakistan military confrontation, which took place after the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir. The attack at Baisaran Valley killed 25 tourists and one local pony operator, triggering military operations between the two countries.

During the interview, Niazi alleged that the conflict resulted from an understanding between Pakistan's military leadership and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She claimed, without providing evidence, that the military operations were conducted to improve the image of Pakistan's armed forces.

She further alleged that India deliberately avoided escalating the conflict after Pakistan's military action on May 10 because of a broader understanding between the two sides.

Niazi also claimed that the military operations were linked to Pakistan's possible recognition of Israel and its potential entry into the Abraham Accords. However, Pakistan does not recognise Israel and has no diplomatic relations with the country. The Abraham Accords are a series of agreements brokered by the United States in 2020 to normalise relations between Israel and several Arab nations.

Political Reaction

Niazi's remarks drew criticism from Punjab Minister for Information and Culture Azma Bokhari of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

Bokhari said Niazi's comments reflected the mindset of her brother, former Prime Minister Imran Khan. She alleged that Khan's family had consistently appeared uncomfortable with Pakistan's achievements and described the remarks as being against the country's national interest. She also criticised Niazi's comments that were perceived as supportive of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
