But a fresh controversy has emerged after the CJP claimed that the family of one of its volunteers, Mohammad Junaid, who had been distributing free food and water to protesters, was detained by police in Ghaziabad. CJP spokesperson Saurav Das criticized the Uttar Pradesh Police's actions, calling it an "illegal crackdown" on protesters and demanding the immediate release of Junaid's family. However, Meerut Police have denied any such detention took place.

Denying the allegations, Senior Superintendent of Police Avinash Pandey told PTI on Saturday, July 25, that no such incident had been brought to his attention. Superintendent of Police (City) Vinayak Gopal Bhonsle added that Meerut Police had checked with all police station heads and confirmed that none of Junaid's family members had been detained.

Junaid is a resident of Nahal village, located in the Masuri area of Ghaziabad district, Uttar Pradesh. According to reports, the village has a notable criminal history, with over 350 individuals, including 39 designated history-sheeters, currently residing there, and offences such as robbery, theft, and cow slaughter are said to occur frequently in the area. Nahal is also described as a Muslim-majority village.
The FIR against them was filed under BNS Sections 152 (acts threatening India's sovereignty, unity, and integrity), 196 (promoting enmity between groups), and 61(2) (criminal conspiracy), in addition to Sections 18, 38, and 39 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, which pertain to criminal conspiracy, extending support to a terrorist organization, and association with one.
Reports also point to Junaid's past social media activity, in which he reportedly voiced support for reconstructing the Babri Masjid at the site where the Ram Mandir currently stands. Additionally, his social media posts are said to reflect sympathetic views toward Hamas, an organization designated as a terrorist group. He reportedly described Ismail Haniyeh, Hamas's former political bureau chief, who was killed in Tehran in July 2024, as a "freedom fighter."
Junaid alleged that his father, Mustafa, was detained and that other relatives were harassed during the incident. He further claimed that UP Police raided his family's home in Ghaziabad, took his relatives away, and confiscated their bank passbooks and PAN cards. According to the family, officers from Ghaziabad's Masoori police station arrived at their home in Nahal village on Thursday evening and searched. Junaid's sister told reporters that police had asked her father to call Junaid and tell him to come home.
