A private bus operator has been arrested in Madhya Pradesh's Shajapur district after a 39-year-old nurse accused him of repeatedly raping her under the pretext of removing "black magic", coercing her into sexual acts with another man, and extorting cash, jewellery and a scooter through intimidation and alleged obscene videos.

Police have registered a case under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including repeated rape, rape under aggravated circumstances, fraud, extortion, criminal intimidation and sexual harassment. The accused has been identified as Shakira Shah alias Raju alias Guddu, a resident of Badnagar in Ujjain district and a private bus operator.

Victim alleges exploitation through superstition

According to the complaint, the woman met the accused on July 3 while travelling by train from Jabalpur to Shajapur. The accused allegedly introduced himself as a practitioner of tantra-mantra and claimed that her in-laws had performed black magic against her family. He allegedly convinced her that rituals were necessary to protect her relatives from impending harm and obtained her mobile number.

The complainant told police that the accused visited her rented accommodation the following day and allegedly claimed that she had to remove her clothes as part of a ritual to prepare a sacred thread. Fearing for her family's safety, she complied.

A few days later, he allegedly told her that the supposed black magic could only be removed if she engaged in sexual relations with him. The woman has alleged that he repeatedly raped her and also took her to Jaora's Hussain Tekri shrine and Ajmer, where he again sexually assaulted her.

Friend allegedly involved; videos used for extortion

The woman further alleged that the accused later claimed she would have to establish relations with another man to completely eliminate the alleged curse. According to her complaint, he brought one of his associates to her room, where both men sexually assaulted her and recorded obscene videos.

She alleged that the accused later used those videos to extort Rs 4.10 lakh, a gold mangalsutra, and subsequently demanded another Rs 50,000. He also allegedly persuaded her to hand over the money on the pretext of purchasing a bus in his own name as part of the purported ritual.

The complainant further alleged that the accused later took away her Activa scooter along with its documents and threatened to upload the videos on social media if she refused to meet his demands.

Two colleagues also accuse him of misconduct

The nurse also informed police that she had shared her ordeal with two junior colleagues, who were facing personal difficulties. According to the complaint, both women visited her residence on July 21, where the accused allegedly behaved inappropriately and made obscene advances towards them. The two women reportedly left immediately after the incident.

Police investigation underway

Shajapur Superintendent of Police Priyanka Shukla said the accused has been arrested and is being interrogated. Police said he is married and has three children.

A case has been registered under Sections 70(1), 64(2)(m), 318(4), 308(2), 351(3) and 75(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), covering charges including repeated rape, aggravated rape, fraud, extortion, criminal intimidation and sexual harassment.

Police said further investigation is underway to verify all allegations, identify the alleged accomplice and examine the claims regarding the alleged extortion and recording of obscene videos. The allegations made by the complainant are part of the ongoing investigation and are yet to be tested in court.
