Hyderabad, July 31: The Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police have registered cases against Meta India's Head, Arun Srinivas, along with several Facebook and Instagram accounts over the alleged circulation of morphed and objectionable content targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the recent Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protests.

The development comes days after Meta drew criticism from the government when a video posted from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's official Facebook account was briefly blocked before being restored. The latest action adds to the growing scrutiny of social media platforms over content moderation and the circulation of AI-generated or manipulated content in India.
The cases were registered following complaints filed by two individuals, S. Aravind Reddy, a 29-year-old businessman, and T. Saikiran Goud, a Telangana BJP activist. According to the complaints, the complainants came across multiple digitally manipulated videos and images of the Prime Minister while browsing Instagram.
The complaints alleged that the posts portrayed the Prime Minister in an obscene, derogatory and misleading manner. They further stated that the associated comments contained offensive language, ridicule and indecent remarks directed at the Prime Minister and other individuals featured in the content, thereby encouraging wider circulation and engagement.

According to the complainants, the content appeared to have been digitally altered or generated using artificial intelligence (AI) before being shared across social media platforms. They argued that such material has the potential to mislead the public, spread misinformation, incite hatred or public unrest, outrage public decency, defame public figures and disturb public order.
The complaints also claimed that the circulation of such content could promote hostility among different sections of society and may amount to violations of applicable legal provisions.
Police have initiated legal proceedings and are expected to examine the role of the identified social media accounts as well as the platform's compliance with applicable laws. Further investigation is underway.
