In a shocking case of child sexual assault, a 12-year-old Class VI girl was brutally raped by her neighbour Sheikh Rabiul (30) in the English Bazar area of Malda district, West Bengal. The victim is currently in critical condition and undergoing treatment at Malda Medical College and Hospital.

According to police and family sources, the incident took place on Monday afternoon when Sheikh Rabiul’s family members were not at home. The accused allegedly lured the minor into his vacant house on the pretext of some work and sexually assaulted her. After the incident, the girl returned home in a distressed state and soon fell seriously ill.

Her family immediately rushed her to the hospital, where doctors confirmed the sexual assault and admitted her in critical condition.

The victim’s family lodged a complaint at the local police station, triggering immediate investigation. Sensing trouble, Sheikh Rabiul fled to Purnia district in neighbouring Bihar to evade arrest. However, Malda police, with the help of technical surveillance and inter-state coordination, traced his location and arrested him late Monday night.

On Tuesday (July 7) morning, the accused was produced before the Malda District Court. Police have sought seven-day custodial interrogation to complete the investigation. A special investigation team has been constituted to ensure a thorough probe and speedy trial.

Speaking to reporters, Maksud Hassan, Additional Superintendent of Police, Malda, said, “The accused will face stringent punishment. We are committed to delivering justice at the earliest. Additional forces have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order and prevent any untoward incident.”

The brutal assault has caused widespread anger and tension in the locality. Local residents have demanded strict action against the accused and better safety measures for children in the area.

The case has been registered under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Indian Penal Code. Further investigation is underway.
