Stranded Iranian Sikh families thank PM Modi after safe return from Tehran amidst crisis

Elderly members of the Sikh community who were stranded in Tehran amid the West Asia crisis have safely returned to India, with one of the evacuees publicly thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, and BJP National Spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill for facilitating their return.
In a video message shared after reaching India, Sardar Lajpal Singh Anand, who has lived in Iran since birth, expressed heartfelt gratitude to Prime Minister Modi for ensuring the safe evacuation of the Sikh Sangat during the crisis. He also thanked Jaiveer Shergill for taking up their concerns with the Government of India, saying his intervention helped secure a swift response from the authorities.

The evacuation followed appeals made by BJP leaders after several elderly Iranian Sikh couples were stranded at Bhai Ganga Singh Sabha Gurdwara in Tehran.
On April 30, BJP National Spokesperson R.P. Singh urged the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar to intervene after a Mahaan Air flight scheduled to fly from Tehran to India on May 5 reportedly refused to allow the Sikh families to board without clearance from the Government of India.

A Mahan Air flight on May 5 is available, but they are being denied boarding without GOI clearance.

On the same day, Jaiveer Shergill also appealed to the MEA, requesting immediate assistance for the stranded families. He said the airline was insisting on prior approval from the Government of India before permitting the passengers to board the flight.
The appeals came amid heightened tensions in West Asia. Earlier, on April 23, the MEA had advised Indian nationals against travelling to Iran and urged those already in the country to leave through designated land border routes. The Indian Embassy in Tehran also activated emergency helplines to assist Indian citizens.
The successful evacuation marks another instance of India's diplomatic efforts to assist citizens and members of the Indian-origin community caught in conflict zones, with the rescued families publicly acknowledging the government's role in ensuring their safe return.
