On Wednesday, August 19, a motorcycle rally carrying black flags, organised by the Khasi Students' Union (KSU), descended into violence across multiple parts of Shillong. The 'student' protesters vandalized the Swami Vivekananda Statue, the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose statue, and also violently attacked vehicles, eventually attacking women and children on board.

According to reports, several vehicles were further damaged during the evening's unrest, there were reports of assault, and government vehicles were reportedly torched. Notably, the district administration had granted permission for Wednesday's rally.

KSU, one of the most prominent and influential student bodies in the Khasi Hills region of Meghalaya, organised the rally as part of its continuing protest centred on a five-point list of demands. These demands touch on issues of recruitment, safeguarding indigenous residents, migration, and environmental protection.

Disturbances broke out in multiple parts of the capital, including Polo, Barik, and Mawlai, as the procession made its way through the city. A police escort vehicle had a side window shattered. In Barik, a vehicle belonging to the National Informatics Centre (NIC) was vandalised, with its rear windshield smashed. Additional vehicles sustained damage as well, among them a pickup truck and one belonging to the Telecom Department.

Events escalated further near the Food Corporation of India office in Mawlai, where a government vehicle was reportedly set on fire. The Swami Vivekananda Statue that was vandalized was in the RR Colony, a Shillong neighbourhood, installed by RRCWS in 2025.

Legal activist LRO slammed the event, saying, "We have been told for decades that the Church has imparted education and has civilised violent, headhunter tribes, but ground reality is the opposite! Wherever there is a Christian majority, terrorism, violence, xenophobia, inter tribal clashes have become part and parcel of daily life! Would the Presbyterian Church respond as to why it failed to "civilize" its followers? Or is the Church promoting ethnic cleansing?"

These incidents followed a warning issued by KSU a day earlier, cautioning that it would intensify its agitation if the state government failed to act on its demands. Speaking at a public gathering at Laitumkhrah Police Point on Tuesday, KSU general secretary Reuben Najiar declared that the group would launch its public campaign the following day.

"From tomorrow, we will take to the streets and begin our public agitation. We will start with a black-flag march across Shillong city to put pressure on and condemn the government," he said. Before this, KSU had conducted rallies and public meetings throughout Shillong on August 17 and 18, giving the state government a 15-day window to respond to its five-point charter of demands.

Notably, the district administration had granted permission for Wednesday's rally. East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal noted that the administration had stayed in touch with KSU throughout, working to prevent the protest from spiralling into a law-and-order crisis.
