On Friday, August 22, the Mumbai FDA
suspended licences for seven restaurants across the city, citing lapses in pest control, food safety, and general hygiene. Among those hit were the well-known Status Restaurant in Nariman Point, the Bombay Presidency Radio Club, and Khar Gymkhana.
At the Bombay Presidency Radio Club in Colaba, inspectors who
visited on August 19 found a heavy fly infestation in the kitchen, dead cockroaches, and improperly placed cockroach traps. They also flagged peeling ceiling paint and plaster hanging directly above areas where food was being prepared, creating a contamination hazard. Other problems included cleaning chemicals and staff clothing stored alongside food and utensils, dirty refrigerators used for non-vegetarian items, poor thawing methods, gaps in kitchen door seals that let pests in, and garbage bins placed too close to the stoves.
McDonald's outlet in Colaba, run by Hardcastle Restaurants, lost its licence for failing to fix problems the FDA had already flagged in earlier notices; these included refrigeration units that weren't properly calibrated, live cockroaches, weak pest-trap coverage, rotting food waste near storage areas, and mopping with dirty cloths.
Inspectors also found staff handling ready-to-eat food without washing their hands after touching dirty footwear and mops. In addition, the outlet was found using processed ingredients like cheese sauce (containing milk solids and emulsifiers) without disclosing this on menus or signage, a labelling gap the FDA said could count as misbranding and mislead customers.
At Status Restaurant in Regent Chamber, Nariman Point (run by Supreme Enterprise), inspectors cited dirty cutlery, standing water, thick grease buildup, rusted containers, and food waste in prep areas. Temperature logs and monitoring equipment were inadequate, raw and cooked foods weren't kept properly separate from each other or from vegetarian items, and food was stored too close to hazardous chemicals. In one instance, a staff member was seen washing his face right over clean utensils.
Khar Gymkhana's registration was suspended over poor storage arrangements for food, packaging, and chemicals; insufficient separation of vegetarian and non-vegetarian items; inadequate sanitisation routines; no hot water available for washing dishes; and unhygienic thawing practices.
The FDA also took action against Novaara in Malad West, Bajrang Sweets in Santacruz West, and ASM Hotels and Hospitality Services in Andheri West. Separately, the agency seized roughly Rs 56,220 worth of food products from Selvapathi Traders, a savoury manufacturer in Dharavi, over labelling shortfalls.
