Mumbai: Eggs thrown at Ganesh idol in Mazgaon from a building housing mostly Muslims; clashes, FIR follow

Tensions flared in Mumbai’s Mazgaon area after eggs were deliberately hurled at a Ganpati procession during its arrival, triggering a clash between two groups, officials said on Monday, August 24. The incident occurred in the intervening night of Sunday and Monday, prompting police to step up security in the area.

As per the initial information available, the eggs were thrown from a building named Continental Heights in the area where mostly Muslims live. The building also has special facilities for Namaz and community halls for Islamic prayers.

According to residents, unidentified miscreants threw eggs at the procession deliberately to hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus. The incident led to a large crowd gathering at the spot, with slogans including “Jai Shri Ram” and “Vande Mataram” being raised, following which an alleged clash broke out between two groups.
 
It is important to note that the building from which eggs were allegedly thrown houses the maximum population of the Dawoodi Bohra community. From one of the property advertisements rolled out in connection with the building, it seems that the flats there are constructed just for the Dawoodi Bohra community. However, it is crucial to note that the miscreants who hurled eggs at the Ganesh idol are yet unidentified and police action to identify them is underway.

Police personnel intervened and brought the situation under control. Residents have demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible, claiming that a similar incident had taken place a few years ago in the Nagpada area of Byculla.

Akhil Public Festival Committee president Hitesh Jadhav condemned the incident and said the eggs were allegedly thrown from a nearby building after the arrival of Lord Ganpati. He said the committee had requested the police to take action within 24 hours and added that Maharashtra Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar had extended support. According to Jadhav, authorities assured them that appropriate action would be taken.
 
 

Police continue to remain deployed in the area to maintain law and order. A case has also been registered under Sections 299 and 196 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
 
BJP leader Nitetsh Rane commented on the issue and said, "To Jihadi’s who threw eggs from an Islamist building during Ganpati Bappa’s Aagman at Mazgaon, Mumbai … you will not be spared. Don’t ever dare to do this again."

The incident bears similarities to an August 2022 incident in Nagpada’s Kamathipura, when eggs were allegedly hurled at a procession carrying a Ganesh idol, resulting in a clash between two community groups. Police had arrested the accused in that case and registered an FIR under Sections 153A and 295A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The accused was subsequently remanded to police custody.
