Fatehpur: Missionary activities in the name of ‘Healing prayer’ sparks row; Activists allege forced conversion

A gathering described as a ‘healing prayer’ meeting in Fatehpur’s Azad Nagar has triggered a controversy after Hindu organisations alleged that it was being used to influence people towards Christianity. Police reached the spot, recovered Bibles and began investigating the conversion allegations.

A controversy erupted in Azad Nagar under the Hussain Ganj police station area of Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh, after a gathering described as a “changaai sabha” (healing prayer meeting) allegedly became a flashpoint over claims of religious conversion.
 
According to the complaint and allegations cited in the material, a woman was allegedly inviting women to prayer meetings on the pretext of curing paralysis and other illnesses. It was further alleged that the meetings involved Bible readings and attempts to influence attendees to give up Hindu dharma.
 
 
Hindu organisations reportedly reached the spot after receiving information about the gathering and objected to the alleged conversion activities, leading to a commotion.
 
Police subsequently reached the location and began an inquiry. Bibles were reportedly recovered from the spot, while officials were also collecting other evidence as part of the investigation.
 
 
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the gathering and the activities allegedly being conducted there.
 
The complainants have also claimed that anti-conversion law has been invoked in the case. They have separately sought action regarding the woman’s Scheduled Caste status and any related benefits, citing her alleged association with the Paswan community. This aspect too would require verification and appropriate legal determination.
 
Police investigation and further legal proceedings are expected to establish whether the gathering was merely a prayer meeting or whether it involved activities prohibited under Uttar Pradesh’s anti-conversion law.
