Drug network hit hard as Assam rifles seizes Rs 168 crore Yaba consignment

Guwahati , August 27: Assam Rifles, in coordination with the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Silchar, seized a large consignment of narcotics worth approximately Rs 168 crore during a joint operation in Assam’s Cachar district, officials said on Thursday.

 

The operation was carried out during the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday at Jujhang Pahar in Lakhipur. Security personnel recovered around 5.6 lakh Yaba tablets (illegal, dangerous pills composed of a powerful combination of methamphetamine and caffeine ) weighing nearly 60 kg. One person was apprehended in connection with the seizure, while a truck allegedly used to transport the contraband was also seized.

 

According to Assam Rifles, the narcotics consignment is suspected to have originated in Manipur and was being transported towards Assam through National Highway-37. The seizure is being viewed as a major setback to the inter-state drug trafficking network operating across the Northeast.

 

 

The operation also highlights the continued efforts of security and enforcement agencies to identify and disrupt narcotics routes in the region. Assam Rifles said the action would help prevent illegal drugs from reaching vulnerable sections of society, particularly the youth.

 

  

 

In a separate operation, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) seized 1.168 kg of suspected heroin, valued at around Rs 2.33 crore, from a passenger train at Guwahati railway station.

 

The joint operation was conducted by the RPF’s Crime Prevention and Detection Squad and NCB Guwahati in the DN Kamrup Express. During checking of coach A-2, two passengers travelling on berths 17 and 18 were intercepted.

 

 

Four packets containing suspected heroin, also known as brown sugar, were allegedly found concealed in their baggage. The two accused were identified as Azabur Rahman, 22, and Sahajahan Ali, 18.
