New Delhi, August 3: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has officially begun designing critical subsystems for the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS), India's first indigenous space station. The Centre informed Parliament on Friday, marking another major milestone
in the country's human spaceflight programme.
In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Union Minister of State for Space Dr. Jitendra Singh said the Baseline Design Review and System Engineering for BAS-01, the station's first module, have been completed. He added that 31 baseline design documents have been released and reviewed by an expert committee, enabling ISRO to begin subsystem design work.

The Bharatiya Antariksh Station is planned as a five-module orbital laboratory in low-Earth orbit. The first module is targeted for launch by 2028, while the complete space station is expected to be operational by 2035. The project received Cabinet approval in October 2024 under the expanded Gaganyaan human spaceflight programme.
According to the government, technologies being developed for Gaganyaan will serve as the foundation for BAS. Significant progress has been made on the Human Rated Launch Vehicle (HLVM3), Orbital Module, Crew Escape System, communication networks, flight operations and crew recovery systems.
ISRO has also completed key precursor missions, including the Test Vehicle Demonstration-1 (TV-D1) and the Integrated Air Drop Tests (IADT-01 and IADT-02). Preparations for G1, the first uncrewed Gaganyaan mission, are currently in advanced stages.
The Centre also informed Parliament that docking technologies and an in-space refuelling concept have been successfully demonstrated. In addition, several components currently sourced from external vendors, including flight suits, crew seats, spacecraft viewports and docking systems, are now being developed indigenously. These efforts align with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, strengthening India's capabilities in human spaceflight and laying the foundation for future crewed space missions.
