New Delhi, August 4: In a significant boost to strategic infrastructure and regional connectivity, the Ministry of Railways has sanctioned $28 million (around ₹240 crore) for the construction of a 17-kilometre railway line in North Bengal. The project is expected to strengthen connectivity towards the India-China-Bhutan tri-junction, while also supporting tourism and economic development in the region.

The announcement was made by Darjeeling MP Raju Bista, who said the new rail line would improve transportation infrastructure in one of India's strategically important border regions. He added that the project reflects the Centre's continued focus on strengthening connectivity in the Northeast and adjoining border areas.
 
According to Bista, the proposed railway line will not only make travel easier for local residents but will also provide better access for tourists visiting North Bengal's scenic destinations. The region, known for its tea gardens, forests and Himalayan landscapes, attracts thousands of visitors every year, and improved rail connectivity is expected to further boost tourism and local businesses.

The project also carries strategic importance due to its proximity to the India-China-Bhutan tri-junction, an area that has remained sensitive from a security perspective. Improved transport infrastructure is expected to facilitate faster movement and better connectivity in the region, supporting both civilian and logistical needs.
 
 
 
As the next step, the Ministry of Railways and the West Bengal Forest Department will jointly conduct a field survey after the monsoon season. The survey will assess the proposed alignment, environmental considerations and forest clearances required before construction begins.
 
The sanctioned railway line is part of the government's broader efforts to modernise rail infrastructure and improve connectivity in border and remote regions. Once completed, the project is expected to enhance regional mobility, promote tourism, create economic opportunities and strengthen India's strategic infrastructure near one of its most critical international border areas.
