Congress MP & JNU Professor Faces Sexual Harassment Allegations

About 10-11 JNU students have formally complained that the professor repeatedly was involved in inappropriate conduct and sexual advances. The matter gained significant public traction in May 2026, after viva examinations at JNU when one student shared her experience of inappropriate behaviour by a professor in a WhatsApp group.

Her account encouraged others to speak out, prompting several senior students to come forward with corroborating stories of similar harassment. The formal complaints, submitted in writing to the university's Internal Complaints Committee (ICC), detailing a disturbing pattern of alleged misconduct. The professor frequently summoned students for "meetings" and gatherings at his on-campus residence, where he allegedly made inappropriate sexual advances.

He is also accused of consistently making lewd and sexually coloured remarks during regular classroom sessions. The most severe allegation asserts that during viva examinations in the first week of May, the professor made sexually suggestive comments and explicitly offered students higher marks in exchange for sexual favours.

Prof. Angomcha Bimol Akoijam joined the Indian National Congress just a few months prior to the 2024 election and secured his candidate nomination through the AICC Central Election Committee.

His relationship with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is institutional, and he serves as the parliamentary face for Gandhi's strategy of critiquing the central government's response to the situation in Manipur. He accompanied Rahul Gandhi and K.C. Venugopal during a visit to a Manipur relief camp in July 2024.

The Congress party appointed him as its Manipur spokesman, providing him with access to the AICC press platforms at 24 Akbar Road and Indira Bhawan.
On August 20 2026, he led the party's formal demand to postpone the Census in Manipur, citing the displacement of 60,000 people and the destruction of over 10,000 houses. His candidacy leverages the Congress party as a political vehicle, effectively using an exploitable gap between his localised Meitei nationalist positions and the Congress national platform on citizenship and security.

While the issue briefly subsided during the university's 45-day semester break, discussions resurfaced when classes resumed in mid-July, leading to a coordinated formalisation of complaints. The JNU ICC has officially taken cognisance of the matter, begun its proceedings, and is currently summoning the complainants to record their statements.

As part of its extended inquiry process, the committee is also expected to gather information from university alumni to identify if there is a historical pattern of abuse. As of now, the ICC has declined to comment publicly, and the JNU administration has not issued an official public statement.
