ABVP Seeks Permanent Cancellation of Umar Khalid Documentary Screening at NLSIU

Bengaluru Sept 15: The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has urged the Union government to intervene and seek the permanent cancellation of a proposed documentary screening on jailed student leader Umar Khalid at the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) in Bengaluru.
The screening, organised by the university’s Law and Society Committee, was originally scheduled for September 14. However, the event was postponed by the organisers, who cited logistical and security-related concerns. The postponement does not amount to a cancellation, as the organisers have indicated that the screening could be held at a later date.
Following the controversy, the ABVP sent letters to Union ministers, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, seeking their intervention against the proposed screening.

The controversy has triggered a wider debate over freedom of expression, academic autonomy and the role of universities in facilitating discussions on politically sensitive issues.For now, the screening remains postponed rather than cancelled, while the ABVP continues to press for its permanent cancellation.
