Tarun Tejpal Surrenders in Goa, Begins 10-Year Jail Term

Panaji: Former Tehelka editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal surrendered before an Additional Sessions Court in Mapusa, Goa, on Monday and was taken into custody to begin serving his 10-year rigorous imprisonment sentence in a 2013 rape case involving a junior colleague. He was subsequently sent to Central Jail at Colvale in North Goa.

The surrender came after the Supreme Court on August 25 directed Tejpal to surrender within three weeks. The court had rejected his plea seeking exemption from surrendering while his appeal against the conviction was pending. The Supreme Court has listed his appeal for hearing on September 22, subject to compliance with the surrender order.

Outside the court, Tejpal said he was confident that “justice will come” and indicated that he would continue his legal battle before the Supreme Court.
 
 
The case dates back to November 2013, when a junior woman colleague accused Tejpal of sexually assaulting her in a hotel lift in Goa during Tehelka’s annual Think festival. Tejpal had denied the allegations.

The case attracted nationwide attention because of Tejpal’s prominent position in the media. He had founded Tehelka, which became nationally known for its investigative journalism and the 2001 Operation West End sting exposing alleged corruption in defence deals.

In May 2021, a Goa trial court acquitted Tejpal, giving him the benefit of doubt. The Goa government challenged the acquittal.

On August 6, 2026, the Goa bench of the Bombay High Court overturned the acquittal, convicted Tejpal of rape and related offences, and sentenced him to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment. The High Court held that the trial court had committed serious errors in its appreciation of evidence.

Tejpal’s appeal against the High Court judgment remains before the Supreme Court.
