West Bengal Transfers IPS Officer Bushra Bano Days After Social Media Video Sparks Controversy

Kolkata , September 15 : Bushra Bano, a 2021-batch IPS officer serving as Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Kharagpur, was transferred by the West Bengal government on Monday. She has been posted as Deputy Commandant in the state Armed Police, while Partha Ghosh will take charge as ASP in her place.

 

The transfer comes days after a video posted by Bano on social media, in which she spoke about her UPSC preparation and the role of Aligarh Muslim University’s residential coaching academy, drew criticism on social media.

 

In the video, Bano spoke about her experience in the higher education sector and discussed the support she received from Aligarh Muslim University during her preparation for the UPSC examination.

 

Bano, an alumnus of the university, also spoke about the university’s residential coaching academy and its role in helping candidates prepare for competitive examinations.

 

 

 

The video began with the Islamic greeting “Assalamualaikum” and ended with “JazakAllah”, while Bano also used the phrase “InshaAllah” during her remarks. The use of these expressions led to criticism and debate on social media.

 

Some social media users questioned why the video did not include national greetings such as “Jai Hind” or “Vande Mataram”.

 

 

The Hindu Legal Fund has also submitted a complaint to the West Bengal Home Secretary over the video. The complaint alleged that a serving IPS officer representing the state should maintain impartiality in public communication and use national expressions while addressing the public.

 

The organisation has sought a review of the matter and appropriate action.
