Delhi Court seeks police report on plea for FIR against Nishu Azad, father over Social Media Posts

Delhi , Sept 23 : A Delhi court on Wednesday sought a response from the Delhi Police on a plea seeking registration of an FIR against student-activist Nishu Azad and her father Sanjay Azad over alleged social media posts containing objectionable references to Hindu deities.

 

Chief Judicial Magistrate Mridul Gupta directed the Delhi Police to submit an action taken report on the complaint. The matter will next be heard in January 2027.

 

The plea was filed by advocate Amita Sachdeva, who had earlier approached the Delhi Police with her complaint. She referred to four social media posts allegedly uploaded between September 2023 and August 2026, concerning Hindu deities including Lord Shiva, Lord Krishna, Goddess Saraswati and Goddess Durga.

 

According to the plea, the posts were deliberately published and continued to remain accessible despite the complainant's request for their removal.

 

 

 

Sachdeva has sought registration of an FIR under Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), concerning deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings, and Section 196, relating to promoting enmity or hatred between groups. She has also invoked relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act.

 

The court's direction came while considering whether further action should be taken on the complaint and the allegations raised by the petitioner.

 

Nishu Azad and Sanjay Azad were also recently mentioned in connection with an incident during CJP protests at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. Right-wing influencer Swatantra Bhardwaj had alleged in a video that he assaulted Sanjay Azad during the protests.

 

 

Bhardwaj was subsequently arrested in connection with the alleged assault and was sent to judicial custody. A Delhi court later granted him interim bail.
