Shivamogga IS Conspiracy case: Fourth accused sentenced to 6 years by NIA Court

Bengaluru , Sept 23 : A special court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in Bengaluru has sentenced Huzair Farhan Baig alias Huzair, accused No. 5 in the Shivamogga Islamic State (IS) conspiracy case, to six years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) and imposed a fine of ₹58,000.

Baig became the fourth accused to be convicted in the case, which was registered four years ago. He pleaded guilty to the charges against him.
 
According to the NIA, Baig had arranged a hideout in Bengaluru for carrying out terrorist activities. The agency alleged that he was radicalised and recruited by co-accused Maaz Muneer Ahmed and Syed Yasin. Baig allegedly arranged the hideout on Ahmed’s instructions.
 
 
 
The case was initially registered by the Karnataka Police in September 2022 and was later taken over by the NIA and re-registered on November 15, 2022. The Shivamogga IS module came to light following a stabbing incident in Shivamogga on Independence Day.

The NIA alleged that the module was operating in Shivamogga district and that the accused were radicalised online by a handler using the alias ‘Colonel’, later identified as Mohammed Shaheed Faisal. Faisal is reportedly absconding and wanted in several NIA terror cases.

Investigators also found that Baig received funds in cryptocurrency through bank accounts belonging to his friends. The cryptocurrency was allegedly converted into fiat currency and used to pay for the Bengaluru hideout.
The court convicted Baig under Sections 120B and 121A of the IPC and Sections 17, 18, 20, 38, 39 and 40 of the UAPA.
 
The NIA has so far filed four chargesheets against 12 accused in the case. Earlier, Arafath Ali was sentenced to six years’ rigorous imprisonment in April 2026, while Zabiulla alias Jabiulla alias Mohammed Zabiulla alias Charbi and Nadeem Faizal were sentenced to six years in prison in November 2025.
