Jaishankar holds IBSA foreign Ministers’ meeting with Brazil, South Africa

New Delhi, Sept 25: External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar attended an IBSA Foreign Ministers’ meeting with his Brazilian counterpart Mauro Vieira and South African counterpart Ronald Lamola, where the three countries discussed global development, multilateralism and reforms in the international system.
The latest meeting comes as the three countries continue to engage on questions related to global governance, development and representation in international institutions. The ministers’ discussions reflected their shared interest in strengthening multilateral cooperation and advancing the concerns of developing countries.
The meeting brought together the foreign ministers of India, Brazil and South Africa under the IBSA Dialogue Forum. The three countries are large democracies and emerging economies that use the platform to coordinate on issues of common interest and strengthen South-South cooperation.
During the meeting, Jaishankar said that IBSA countries continue to actively participate in and shape global discussions on development, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), poverty eradication, multilateralism and South-South cooperation.

The ministers also exchanged views on reforms to the United Nations system, including the reform of the UN Security Council. According to Jaishankar, the three countries shared convergent views on the need for such reforms.
Jaishankar stressed the importance of strengthening consultations among IBSA members as discussions on reform of the global governance system become increasingly urgent.
The meeting also underlined the role of developing countries in international decision-making and highlighted the importance of greater cooperation among countries of the Global South.

IBSA, or the India-Brazil-South Africa Dialogue Forum, was established as a platform for cooperation among the three countries. It focuses on areas including political coordination, economic cooperation, sustainable development and social development.
The forum provides India, Brazil and South Africa with an opportunity to exchange views on major international issues and coordinate positions in multilateral forums.
