Blast at critical ONGC-MRPL Refinery rattles Mangalore; Strategic Energy SECURE

Mangalore, Sep 30: A powerful explosion followed by a major fire disrupted operations at the Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) facility near Jokatte, Kalavar. At a time when India is working hard to secure its fuel supply against global shipping threats, a disaster at such an important refinery immediately triggered a massive security and safety response.

 

 

 

 

The blast occurred around 12:20 PM inside the critical Coker Hydrotreater (CHT) unit of the refinery's Phase-III complex. The shockwave generated a deafening boom felt several kilometres away, shattering window panes at the Jokatte gram panchayat building and rattling the administrative offices of the nearby Mangaluru International Airport. Plummeting stocks by 10% from daily highs, the incident underscored the financial and infrastructural sensitivity surrounding India's refining capabilities.

 

 

 

 

Emergency response teams at the ONGC subsidiary immediately engaged on-site containment protocols. Multiple fire tenders from the Pandeshwar and Kadri stations, supported by a specialized fire vessel from the New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA), rushed to the spot to battle the blaze. City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy CH confirmed that the fire was successfully brought under control.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

MRPL officials confirmed there are no fatalities. However, eight contract workers sustained minor injuries, while one labourer, Rajesh Baptist, suffered serious 35% burn injuries and is being treated at a local hospital.

 

Because MRPL is a crucial supplier of petroleum products and feeds India's underground strategic oil reserves, Dakshina Kannada MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta intervened to oversee safety assessments and check operational readiness. Precautionary infrastructure checks are underway at vital installations, including the airport's precision lighting systems. While a high-pressure boiler malfunction is suspected, a formal joint technical investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause and prevent vulnerabilities within India's strategic energy network.
