Bengaluru Police Launch Major Drive to Verify Foreign Nationals, Over 2,000 Questioned in a Day

Bengaluru , September 4 : Bengaluru City Police have launched a special verification drive to identify foreign nationals allegedly staying illegally in the city, with more than 2,000 individuals questioned in a single day as part of the operation.

The drive, being conducted under the directions of Bengaluru City Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh, is aimed at verifying the immigration status and documentation of foreign nationals residing across the city.
 
Police teams from different divisions have been deployed across various police station limits to check visa validity, Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) registration, passports and other relevant documents.
 
According to police sources, several individuals were found either without valid documentation or allegedly overstaying their visas. Officials said information had also been received about some nationals from Nigeria and Bangladesh who were allegedly residing in Bengaluru without proper authorisation.
 
Authorities said legal action would be initiated against foreign nationals found violating immigration rules. Deportation proceedings may also be undertaken wherever required, with central agencies likely to be approached for assistance in cases involving immigration or national security concerns.
 
As part of the exercise, police are compiling detailed information about foreign residents, including their country of origin, date of entry into India, purpose of visit, passport and visa validity, and details of local contacts or sponsors.
 
Police have also directed house owners and property managers to provide details of foreign nationals staying on their premises, including valid visa and FRRO-related documents, to the concerned police stations.
 
 
The latest drive follows several police operations against suspected illegal immigrants in Bengaluru.
 
In January 2026, police conducted raids in Electronics City and Hebbagodi, detaining more than two dozen Bangladeshi nationals who were allegedly staying illegally. Police had also alleged that some of them were working in scrapyards and using forged identity documents.
 
In November 2025, the Bengaluru CCB arrested 14 foreign nationals in a separate operation and seized narcotic substances valued at approximately ₹7.7 crore. Among those arrested was a Nigerian woman who was allegedly overstaying her visa and was suspected of involvement in drug trafficking.
 
Meanwhile, the verification drive also led to the detention of a 31-year-old migrant worker from Nadia district in West Bengal, who was suspected of being a Bangladeshi national.

Tilak Nagar police detained Mohammed Sheikh and questioned him for around 10 hours before confirming his Indian citizenship. He was subsequently released after his identity was verified.
 
Sheikh, who has reportedly been living in Bengaluru since 2009 with his wife and three children, works in the construction sector. He said police examined his documents and mobile phone during the verification process.
The incident highlights the importance of thorough verification before taking action against individuals based on suspicion.
 
The Bengaluru Police's verification exercise is expected to continue across the city in the coming days, with authorities appealing to residents and property owners to cooperate and report suspected violations to the nearest police station.
