HarperCollins India to Publish Sonia Gandhi’s Memoir ‘Belonging’ on November 10

New Delhi, Sept 4: HarperCollins India on Friday announced that it will publish Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi’s much-anticipated memoir “Belonging: A Journey of Love” in India on November 10, ending weeks of uncertainty over the book’s Indian publisher.
The announcement comes days after Penguin Random House India (PRHI) said it would not publish the memoir in India following an impasse during discussions with Gandhi’s team. PRHI had initially been expected to bring out the Indian edition but said the disagreement centred on “a particular issue” and denied that external pressure had influenced its decision.
Reports had suggested that discussions involved proposed editorial changes or deletions in parts of the manuscript, including references to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the RSS, communal issues and India-China relations. Gandhi’s team was reportedly unwilling to accept the proposed changes. These reports have not been fully confirmed by the parties involved.
The memoir is expected to cover Gandhi’s childhood in post-war Italy, her marriage to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, her entry into public life and politics, and the assassination of her husband.
The worldwide edition is being published by Alfred A. Knopf, an imprint of Penguin Random House, with November 10 announced as the global release date. HarperCollins’ announcement therefore secures an Indian publisher while the book remains the subject of considerable political and publishing interest.
HarperCollins described the memoir as a “dramatic and deeply personal” account of love, identity, duty and belonging, offering what it called a rare insider’s view of India’s journey.
